Well what they say is true-it is the most wonderful time of year. It’s also the busiest! I can’t believe it’s already December and the holidays are already here! The kids are ecstatic about December and all the wonderful holidays and traditions we are learning about. Quite a bit has been going on in room 16!
We have been focusing quite a bit of time on decoding unknown words and reading our site words. This is so important because as we begin our guided reading groups students will get leveled reading books and having a solid foundation of site words and strategies will help them tremendously. We have also been learning about the characters, setting and soon we’ll explore the plot of different books we’ve read in class. In writing we continue to practice important concepts like capitalization at the beginning of the sentence as well as names and places, periods and including details in our writing. Writing is something that all students should work on, so having your student write at home is a great way to continue to build their confidence and ability to write!
In math we are working quite a bit on addition sentences and fact families. At home, you can reinforce this by practicing addition with your student. In class we have memorized that “Addition is taking things and putting them together.” Ask your student to build an addition problem and then write the sentence that matches it. For example, your child can put a pile of 4 red blocks and 3 blue blocks. Ask them to “put them together” and tell you how many they have in all. Then, ask your child to write the addition sentence (3 + 4 = 7). As they get better at this concept, an easy way to increase the difficulty is by increasing the numbers (for example: 7 blocks plus 5 blocks, 10 blocks plus 8 blocks.)
We’ve had some wonderful memories made with our 5th grade buddies coming to work on a turkey project, working on projects in our houses, and many birthdays to celebrate. Please check the class photo page to see some new pictures!
Hope everyone is enjoying this chilly Sunday. I’m curled up in a blanket cheering on the 49ers!
